Reading an article
Each page view is counted so we can see which explainers people find useful. The count records the page and the time. It is not tied to a name, an account or a profile, and it is not shared with an advertising network, because this site does not run one.
Like every web server, ours receives your IP address and browser user-agent as part of making the request work. These are used to serve the page and to keep the site available. They are not used to build a profile of you.
The newsletter
If you subscribe, we store the email address you give us, and nothing else. It is used to send the newsletter. It is not sold, rented, or passed to anyone. Every email carries an unsubscribe link, and using it removes the address.
The contact form
If you send a message, we store what you typed: your name, your email address, the subject you chose and your message. It is used to read and reply to what you sent, and to fix anything you reported. Correction reports are kept as a record of what was changed and when, because that record is part of the editorial policy.
Cookies
This site does not set advertising or tracking cookies. Your browser may store a small amount of data locally to remember interface preferences. Nothing there identifies you.
Third parties
Web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to Google's servers to fetch them. Images and pages are served through a content delivery network so they load quickly. Both receive the technical information any server receives when your browser asks it for a file.
Your requests
You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Send the request through the contact page from the address concerned, and we will act on it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. Material changes will be described rather than quietly substituted.
